Why Expansion Tanks Exist
When water is heated, it expands. In an open system, some expansion may move back toward the supply. A closed system created by a check valve, backflow preventer, or pressure-reducing device needs a place to manage that increase. The expansion tank uses an air cushion for this purpose. If that cushion is lost, pressure can rise and stress valves, fittings, and the water heater.
Signs That Warrant Assessment
A dripping temperature-and-pressure relief valve, fluctuating pressure, pipe banging, recurring connection leaks, or a waterlogged tank can prompt inspection. None of these symptoms proves the expansion tank is the cause. A provider may need to measure static and operating pressure and inspect other pressure-control components before recommending replacement.
What A Replacement Involves
The water system may need to be isolated and depressurized. The provider can inspect the mounting, connection, tank orientation, air charge, and surrounding corrosion before installing a compatible tank. Size depends on water-heater capacity, system pressure, and the characteristics of the closed system. The replacement should be supported properly rather than left hanging from a pipe.
Related Problems To Rule Out
A failed pressure-reducing valve, excessive supply pressure, blocked relief discharge, incorrect air charge, or damaged water-heater connection can create similar symptoms. A relief valve must remain functional and unobstructed. Replacing the expansion tank without correcting excessive pressure may lead to another failure.
Safety And Preparation
Do not cap, block, or remove a relief valve yourself. Keep people away from hot discharge and place no belongings beneath an active leak. Note when pressure changes occur and whether discharge happens during heating. Clear access around the heater and identify any shutoffs if safely visible.
Questions Before Work
Ask how the provider determined the tank failed, what system pressure was measured, what size and mounting method are proposed, and whether the relief valve and pressure-control equipment will be tested. Confirm whether draining, reconnection, leak testing, and cleanup are included. A complete assessment is more useful than changing a tank based only on age.
